Fogging optics are often associated with the fact that the car was drowned or something like that. In fact, one should not rush to draw conclusions about the accident rate of the car. Almost every motorist has encountered fogging optics, especially the front. If they did not encounter them, then they clearly heard about the occurrence of a similar reason.

As a rule, this happens when the car leaves the car wash in hot weather, it is then that a cloudy effect (plaque) occurs inside the headlights, or even noticeable condensation. There can be many reasons, from banal clogging of air ducts (breathers) in optics, to depressurization of the butt part.

What are the reasons for fogging car headlights?

The appearance of condensation in optics will initially cease to be attractive, and condensation can also damage the optics parts. Accordingly, the more expensive the optics and the richer in functionality, the more expensive it will be to repair it in the future.

The main and fairly common cause can be clogging of the so-called breathers, which are responsible for relieving pressure in the optics. From the lessons of physics, it is worth remembering that an increase in pressure in a closed space sooner or later breaks the tightness. It is for this that the air vents are installed in order to regulate the pressure inside the optics in time. We also remember from physics lessons that moisture that got inside the container evaporates with increasing pressure and temperature, settling on the surface.

The second reason for fogging the optics can be depressurization, which, over time, threatens any car. As a rule, the assembly sealant, which is used in the cartridge or the joint of two parts of the optics, is destroyed.

The third and well-visible reason is considered to be a crack in the optics. Moisture enters the optics through microcracks; the solution to the problem is to seal the crack or replace it with a new part.

Why is fogging of optics dangerous?

Like any moisture, fogging of the optics will cause irreversible consequences for the optics and electrics of headlights in general. Now let's look at the consequences in more detail. The biggest problem from the appearance of moisture in the optics can be the shortening of the life of the bulbs, whether they are halogen or xenon. Car owners sometimes ignore fogging of headlights and prefer to change bulbs more often, followed by replacement of other optics parts.

Do not forget that when the optics are working, the surface heats up. Moisture on the heated surface of the reflector can easily spoil it. It also leads to corrosion of metal elements. The presence of moisture in the optics will be a huge nuisance for car owners in which the optics are not collapsible and out of order, in which case you will have to change the entire headlight. Repeatedly the presence of liquid in the headlamp, especially in hot summer weather, caused a blind spot. In this case, the light is refracted in the moisture droplets and the lighting is very distorted, thereby impairing the driver's visibility.

How to get rid of fogging headlights from the inside?

There is a problem with fogging optics in the car, there is also a desire to get rid of this problem. There are many tips and options for solving this problem, but experts identify three main ones that will help remove moisture from optics or prevent the appearance of it.

  • Many drivers have made it a rule to turn off the lights prematurely before entering a car wash or to hide the car in the shade before washing. This minimizes the chance of condensation in the optics due to temperature differences. It is also not recommended to roll the car out of the box, into the hot sun, it is better to let the optics and the car body accept the ambient temperature.
  • Do not remove the breathers on the optics, you will save time on drying the headlight, but dirt can get inside. This will provoke the destruction of the optical elements or the failure of individual elements. It is better to dry the optics from moisture in a clean, closed, dry room, without wind and dust.
  • Sometimes check the condition of the breathers (ventilation valves). Do not be lazy to remove dirt or cobwebs in time. Also pay attention to the place where the wiring enters the headlight, or rather the rubber seal. It should adhere tightly to both the headlight housing and crimp the wiring tightly.
  • Recently, optical manufacturers have begun to introduce absorbent silica gel beads. Often these are small bags with round balls, the same can often be found in new shoes or other things that are afraid of moisture. It will not be difficult to make such a device yourself. It is enough to find a similar ready-made bag and put it near the headlamp breather or other hole where air passes into the optics.

Fogging up the headlights of a car is not the best situation, but you shouldn't rush to the service center either. The simplest, but also the most expensive solution, is to replace the optics with a new one. It should be understood that both headlights will need to be changed, thereby maintaining a synchronous look. Do not forget to inspect the headlights for tightness from time to time, this will not only help to avoid moisture ingress in the future, but also prolong the life of the optics and its elements.
