It has been rumored for months that Porsche is preparing a breakthrough in alloy wheels. But there were no even the slightest hints of what the novelty would represent from itself. Now Porsche has officially unveiled and revealed the details of the carbon rims.

The new Porsche 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series has been wrapped entirely in new carbon rims. According to representatives of the company, starting next year, such wheels can be ordered as an additional option. The manufacturer announced the price, the minimum set in Germany will cost from $ 17884.

For now, only 20 ″ carbon wheels (with center mount) are available to the buyer. These are based on the manufacture of carbon fiber weaving technology, as a material used reinforced carbon plastic, better known as CFRP. Thanks to the use of this technology and modern materials, it has made it possible to lighten the wheels by 8.5 kg (this is about 20% in comparison with the previous standard wheels of the manufacturer). The same technology made it possible to reinforce the wheels by the same 20% in comparison with analogues. According to the manufacturer, to make one such Porsche wheel, 8 meters of square special fabric with carbon were needed. The manufacturer did not declassify the manufacturing process itself, but made it clear that it is quite complicated and requires a lot of time. The world's largest and most unique machine is used for weaving, its diameter is about 9 meters.

The beginning of the production of a Porsche carbon rim from the assembly of the base itself, or rather its weaving. Further, the resulting frame is impregnated with a special resin and hardened under high temperature and high pressure. After that, for a long time, the carbon discs are cooled. The final touch for additional protection is the application of clear varnish.

As many have already noted, Porsche is the first car company in the world to undertake the production and serial production of carbon rims, since the technology is very difficult. There are still huge advantages to producing such wheels through weaving technology when compared to the more conventional method of impregnating carbon cloth. It is due to weaving that the density, structure and rigidity of the discs increase. The use of an unusual material has resulted in minimized waste during the production of carbon wheels.
